Invention Facts and Background

RJ Mitchell was trying to invent a new effective fighter plane that would reach 250 mph for World War 2. His first plane did not fit the requirement s since it was 230 mph.

The Spitfire was invented and tested in 1936. He worked hard for the plane.  After his death in June 1937 he was able to see his prototype fly. The air ministry also saw the plane fly and thought it was impressive so they ordered 310 spitfire to be used. The Spitfire became one of the most successful fighter planes in history.
